Sir Anthony J. Leggett is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor and Center for Advanced Study Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A leading figure in low-temperature physics, his groundbreaking research on superfluidity earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2003. He is a member of numerous prestigious institutions, including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Society (U.K.), and has been knighted (KBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of physics.
Professor Leggett’s research has profoundly influenced our understanding of superfluid helium and other strongly coupled superfluids, the quantum physics of macroscopic dissipative systems, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. His work continues to shape theoretical condensed matter physics and the potential application of quantum mechanics to macroscopic systems, including in areas like topological quantum computing and high-temperature superconductivity.
